HANDMADE

House Blend Compost

We’ve rescued 200 tons of food redirecting it to nonprofit partners for distribution. Every inedible portion is transformed into our signature House Blend compost, which has been used and tested in multiple community gardens in Los Angeles to grow more food.  Our recipe is deeply rooted in our principles.

About us

We do not use water in the production process of our recipe

About This Product

Benefits of the compost

Moderate to High Fertility: With a good fertility level, this compost improves the overall nutrient status of the soil, supporting healthy and thriving plants.

Increased Microbial Activity: The organic matter promotes the growth of beneficial soil microorganisms, which help break down organic material and make nutrients more available to

Ideal for a Variety of Plants: This compost supports a wide range of plants, from garden vegetables and fruits to flowers and lawns, by providing a balanced nutrient mix that encourages strong, healthy growth.

Recommendations for optimal use.

Best when applied on top like mulch-: When applied as a mulch with a 2 inch thickness, this compost will help retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature, contributing to healthier plant roots.

Make it into a Compost tea-: Mix 1 gallon pot full of compost with 5 gallons of water. For a 12 sq ft area.

Continue re applying as needed for maintenance purposes.

Environmental Benefits

  •  Reduces Waste: By using this compost, you are recycling organic waste, diverting it from landfills, and turning it into a valuable resource for improving soil health and supporting sustainable farming practices.
  • Carbon Sequestration: Organic matter in compost helps store carbon in the soil, which contributes to mitigating climate change by reducing the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere.
  • Non-toxic and Safe for Plants: The compost has low levels of heavy metals, ensuring it is safe for plants and the environment, unlike some synthetic fertilizers that can pose risks.

How to use our Compost

Use #1- Planted MATURE fruit trees

  • Prepare the Soil: Gently loosen the soil around the tree using a hand cultivator. Be cautious to avoid damaging the root system. This helps improve water retention.
  • Measure Water: Fill a 5-gallon bucket with water.
  • Determine Compost Amount:
  • For a 2-gallon pot: Use 5 quarts of the house blend compost, applied as a 1/2-inch layer.
  • If using a 1/4-inch layer of compost, reduce to 1 gallon of water.
  • Mix Compost and Water:
  • Add granular compost to the water. Lukewarm water is preferred, but cold water is acceptable if warm water isn’t available.
  • Stir thoroughly until the compost is evenly mixed with the water.
  • Water the Tree: Pour the compost-infused water around the base of the tree to nourish it deeply and enhance soil health.

ATTENTION: If using 1/4 concentrate compost, use half the recommended amount..

Use #2- Planting a new tree 5 gallon pot

  1. Dig the Hole: Prepare a hole large enough to accommodate the tree's root ball comfortably.
  2. Add Initial Compost: Fill the bottom of the hole with a 1/4 portion of a 5-gallon pot of house blend compost. This will create a nutrient-rich base for the tree.
  3. Position the Tree: Place the tree in the hole, ensuring it sits at the correct height with the root flare slightly above the ground level.
  4. Backfill with a Soil Mix:
Mix 1/4 of a 5-gallon pot of house blend compost with 1/4 portion of native soil.

Use this mixture to fill in the sides around the tree, packing gently to remove air pockets      without damaging the roots

Top with Pure Compost: Finish by  adding a 2-inch layer of pure compost on top of the soil around the tree. Avoid mixing this layer with native soil, as it will act as a nutrient-rich mulch.

This method ensures the tree is supported with proper nutrients and promotes healthy root establishment.

ATTENTION: If using 1/4 concentrate compost, use half the recommended amount..

Use #3- Plants and trees 1-3 feet tall in ground and pots

Spread a 2-inch layer of compost around the base of your plants, keeping it within a 5-inch radius of the center.

Use #5. Mature trees and and plants. Make compost tea

  1. Gather Supplies: Purchase a bubbler ($11 on Amazon), a mesh bag, and a 5-gallon bucket.
  2. Prepare the Bucket: Fill the bucket with water and place the bubbler on the side of the bucket, ensuring it is positioned above the water.
  3. Measure the Compost:
    • For more precise measurement, use a small house blend compost bag or measure from a larger bag using a 1-gallon pot.
    • Place the compost in the mesh bag, ensuring it is securely closed.

Bubble the Compost:

  • Submerge the mesh bag with compost into the bucket, ensuring it stays closed.
  • Let it bubble for:
    • 42 hours if the temperature is between 40°F to 60°F
    • 24 hours if the temperature is between 60°F to 80°F
    • Anything above 12 hours is acceptable for optimal results.

  1. Water the Plants: Once finished, transfer the nutrient-rich solution into a watering can and aim at the base of your plants.
  2. Finish Off: Water the plants to ensure they absorb the nutrients effectively.

This method will help create a nutrient-rich solution for your plants.
